If part of your brain always seems to be thinking about food, you're far from alone. Lots of people call it food noise.

Many people on a GLP-1 say it finally goes quiet. The American Journal of Clinical NutritionSourceMozaffarian D, Agarwal M, Aggarwal M, et al. Nutritional priorities to support GLP-1 therapy for obesity: a joint Advisory from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, the American Society for Nutrition, the Obesity Medicine Association, and The Obesity Society. 01Food noise

What is food noise?

It's the popular name for constant thoughts about food: what's in the fridge, what you'll have next, the snack you promised yourself you'd skip.

Thinking about food is normal. It becomes food noise when the thoughts bother you or get in the way of your day.Harvard Health PublishingSourceHarvard Health Publishing. And no, it isn't a lack of willpower, so getting help with it isn't cheating. Hunger and fullness are run by hormones and signals between your gut and your brain, which is exactly where GLP-1s come in.The American Journal of Clinical NutritionSourceMozaffarian D, Agarwal M, Aggarwal M, et al. 02How it works

What does GLP-1 do?

GLP-1 is a hormone your gut makes when you eat. It helps tell your brain you've had enough, and it slows how fast your stomach empties.U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Indications and Usage; Dosage and Administration; Clinical Pharmacology. All sourcesThe American Journal of Clinical NutritionSourceMozaffarian D, Agarwal M, Aggarwal M, et al. Your own GLP-1 is gone within a couple of minutes, though, so its message is short and sweet. The American Journal of Clinical NutritionSourceMozaffarian D, Agarwal M, Aggarwal M, et al. GLP-1 medicines mimic that hormone, and they're built to last. A weekly shot or a daily pill keeps the signal going around the clock.U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Indications and Usage; Dosage and Administration; Clinical Pharmacology. All sources

03Your brain

Why does food noise go quiet?

Mostly because of your brain. GLP-1 receptors sit in several areas of the brain that handle appetite, and the medicines switch them on.U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Indications and Usage; Dosage and Administration; Clinical Pharmacology. All sources

They also touch the brain's reward system, which runs on dopamine and drives the "I really want that" feeling. Brain scans show changes there too, which may be why cravings ease. The slower stomach helps you feel full, mostly in the first weeks. That effect tends to fade over time, while the appetite effect keeps going.U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Indications and Usage; Dosage and Administration; Clinical Pharmacology. All sourcesBMJ Open Diabetes Research & CareSourceAmerican Diabetes Association Professional Practice Committee for Obesity. 04Hunger and cravings

Is it hunger, cravings or both?

Both, and they're a little different. Hunger is your body asking for food. A craving is wanting one food in particular, often something rich or sweet.

Food noise is different again. A craving usually fades once you've had the food, while food noise can keep going, even mid-meal.Obesity Action CoalitionSourceObesity Action Coalition. Everything you need to know about food noise. October 24, 2025.Open the source All sources

The bottom line

GLP-1 medicines quiet food noise mainly by working on the parts of your brain that handle appetite, with a slower stomach helping early on.

The quiet can ease a little over time while the medicine keeps working, and a few good habits make the most of it.

When you're ready, compare programs on our ranking to find one that fits.

Important safety information

  • Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are prepared by state-licensed pharmacies and are not FDA approved. The FDA does not review their safety, effectiveness or quality, and clinical trial results for brand-name drugs do not carry over to them.
  • Semaglutide and tirzepatide carry a boxed warning for a risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, based on animal studies, and are not for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or MEN2, or who is pregnant. Other warnings include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and a higher risk of low blood sugar when combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea. The most common side effects are digestive, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation.
