Starting a GLP-1 is a great moment to get moving. And you don't need a gym membership or a fancy plan to do it.
A daily walk counts. So does carrying the groceries in.3U.S. Department of Health and Human ServicesSourceU.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition. 2018.Open the source All sources
Here's how to stay active on a GLP-1, protect your muscle and keep your energy up, one easy step at a time.
01The short answer
Do you need to exercise on a GLP-1?
You don't have to, but it really helps. Each medicine is approved alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. The big studies asked people to aim for about 150 minutes of activity a week.1U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information and Medication Guides for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Indications and Usage; Adverse Reactions; Drug Interactions; Clinical Studies; Medication Guides. All sources

02How much
How much exercise do you need on a GLP-1?
The same amount that's good for everyone. U.S. guidelines suggest 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week, like brisk walking. Add strength work for all your major muscles on 2 or more days. You don't need intense workouts: moderate activity counts.3U.S. Department of Health and Human ServicesSourceU.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition. 2018.Open the source All sources
Experts who focus on GLP-1s suggest strength training at least 3 times a week if you can, tailored to your fitness.4The American Journal of Clinical NutritionSourceMozaffarian D, Agarwal M, Aggarwal M, et al. Nutritional priorities to support GLP-1 therapy for obesity: a joint Advisory from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, the American Society for Nutrition, the Obesity Medicine Association, and The Obesity Society. Am J Clin Nutr. 2025;122(1):344-367.Open the source All sources
If that sounds like a lot, start smaller. "Some physical activity is better than none," and you can build up from a few 5-minute walks a day. Moderate means you can talk, but not sing.3U.S. Department of Health and Human ServicesSourceU.S. Department of Health and Human Services. 03Strength
Why does strength training matter so much?

When you lose weight, some of it is muscle, whatever the method. Strength work helps you keep it.3U.S. Department of Health and Human ServicesSourceU.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition. 2018.Open the source All sources4The American Journal of Clinical NutritionSourceMozaffarian D, Agarwal M, Aggarwal M, et al. Protein matters too, but on its own it isn't enough: experts say it works best alongside strength training.4The American Journal of Clinical NutritionSourceMozaffarian D, Agarwal M, Aggarwal M, et al. It doesn't have to mean a gym. Bands, light weights and body-weight moves like wall push-ups or standing up from a chair all count. So does carrying heavy shopping or digging in the garden.3U.S. Department of Health and Human ServicesSourceU.S. Department of Health and Human Services. 05Energy
What if you feel too tired to work out?
Feeling wiped out? You're not alone. It's common to feel more tired at first, especially around dose changes, and tiredness is on every GLP-1's list of common side effects.1U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information and Medication Guides for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Indications and Usage; Adverse Reactions; Drug Interactions; Clinical Studies; Medication Guides. All sources
Gentle movement still counts on low days: a stroll, some stretching, a few chair stands.
Eating very little can sap your energy, so try a small snack with some protein before you move, even if you're not very hungry.4The American Journal of Clinical NutritionSourceMozaffarian D, Agarwal M, Aggarwal M, et al. 06Feeling off
What if you feel dizzy, or your heart rate is up?
A little lightheadedness can happen, especially if you haven't eaten or drunk much, or you take blood pressure medicine. These medicines can also nudge your resting heart rate up by a few beats, so your watch may show a higher number. That's common. If your heart races at rest for several minutes, tell your clinician.1U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information and Medication Guides for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Indications and Usage; Adverse Reactions; Drug Interactions; Clinical Studies; Medication Guides. All sources

07Timing
When's the best time to exercise on a GLP-1?
There's no set rule. Many people find stomach side effects are strongest in the first day or two after a dose, so plan lighter days then if that's you.10Cleveland ClinicSourceCleveland Clinic. How to keep weight off with GLP-1s. May 5, 2026.Open the source All sources

08Fuel and fluids
What should you eat and drink around workouts?
